Alurung-speaking people, dispersed over four islandsThis article is a stub, to be elaborated. Alurung is a sister language of Lamaholot, which is likewise derived from Proto-Lamaholot. It is spoken by relatively small clusters on Alor and Pantar, and on two islets in between them, Ternate and Buay. The Alurung have a few unique ikating skills, such as the use of kolon susu, a non-cotton plant fibre to supplant the scarce cotton, and various unique dyes, including a beautiful and stable moss green, as well as pinks and a purplish morinda made with dyes from sea urchins. Literature on Alurung ikatThe first, and so far only, scholarly work on the ikat of the Aluring of Ternate is an article by Yulianti Peni and Dr. Linda S. McIntosh, 'Rarely-Documented Textiles: Tenapi of Umapura Village, Ternate Isle, Alor Regency, Indonesia', in Textiles Asia, Vol. 12, Issue 1, 2020. Other sources: Emilie Wellfelt, 'The Secrets of Alorese "Silk" yarn: Kolon susu, triangle trade and underwater women in Eastern Indonesia". Susanne Rodemeier, 'Tutu kadire in Pandai – Munaseli: Erzählen und Erinnern auf der vergessenen Insel Pantar (Ostindonesien).
