Ikat from Pantar, Solor Archipelago, Indonesia

346 Solor Archipelago, Pantar

Kafate (sarong)

Locale: Baranusa, NW Pantar, Alurung (Alorese speaking) people.
Period: 1934-1942
Yarn: To be verified
Technique: Warp ikat
Panels: 2
Design: Tenapi, 2-panel sarong as of yet unidentified type. The main ikated motifs are very similar to those on kafate from Ternate, to wit the Peni & McIntosh Type B, but the midfield is more elaborately designed. The bands in maroon with light horizontal dashes is very similar to that on Ternatan Type D and E. It appears that Pantarese weavers let themselves be inspired by Ternatan and Alorese designs, but may not have had the same fixed canon as to which descent group can use which design.
