Pori lonjong (banner)
| Locale: | Rongkong, probably. | Period: | Late colonial | Panels: | 2 | Design: | Eight large blocks of ikated designs, with tumpal-like zig-zag borders at both extremes and band with sawtooth patterns in the midle. Some of the design blocks - the innermost four - appear to have been influenced by patola motifs. The side panels are unusually wide for pori lonjong and may indicate a somewhat greater age than is here assumed. | Size: | 136 x 388 cm (53.5 x 152.7 in) | Weight: | 2050 g (388 g/m2) | Yarn: | Cotton, hand-spun, coarse | Comment: | Cloth intended as a banner to decorate a deceased's house, a temple or burial site, or to be strung up to a high point and serve as a pathway for the dead to puya, heaven. This example is rich in design variation and has a less stiff character than most, a unifying rendering that fuses the different patterns rather than emphasizing their distinctness. Patent patola influence - specifically of the reticulated type represented by Metropolitan Museum of Art's Nr. 30.88.4. Tested for presence of wool filler - negative. | Background: | Additional information in chapters on Sulawesi and Toraja. | Published: | Ikat Textiles of the Indonesian Archipelago, 2018.
