Sulawesi ikat - rare and striking
This article is a stub, to be elaborated. While Sulawesi is mostly renowned for its bark cloth, made with ancient techniques here developed to a very high degree, it has also produced highly valued ikat. The best known are the ikat textiles made in the Toraja and Bugis regions. Until the early 20th C. ikat was also produced in the Minahasa, in the very north of the island. Literature
As of this writing in 2016 there is no monograph on the textiles of Sulawesi yet. Most books covering Indonesian textiles have chapters on Sulawesi, in which ikat usually figures rather prominently.
