370 Timor, West Timor
| Locale: | Biboki | Period: | 1930-1945 | Yarn: | Cotton, hand-spun, medium | Technique: | Warp ikat | Panels: | 2 | Design: | [YET TO BE DESCRIBED] | Comment: | [PHOTOGRAPHY PROVISIONAL] As the microphotography shows, this cloth was made with morinda, rather than indigo weft, a Biboki hallmark. As morinda is harder to grow and harvest than indigo and also hard to dye with (it requires a mordant to adhere to cotton), this can be seen as a touch of luxury. Because the weave is relatively loose, the red weft is showing throughout, giving the cloth a pinkish tinge. | Background: | Chapters on Timor and West Timor. | Compare: | 176 177 216 303 370 | |
