335 Timor, West Timor
Mau naek (men's wrap)
| Locale: | Amanuban: village of Pusu, Lakat, Ofu or Naime hamlet in desa Nule | Period: | Early 20th century. | Yarn: | Ikated central panel hand-spun cotton, side panels in pre-dyed commercial yarn, two-ply and quad-ply, except fine stripes in ikat on hand-spun yarn. | Technique: | Warp ikat | Size: | 78 x 198 cm (2' 6" x 6' 5") LW: 2.54 | Weight: | 390 g (13.8 oz), 253 g/m2 (0.83 oz/ft2) | Design: | The central panel is decorated with eight horses, two of them with riders, clearly anthropomorphic standing on top of them, the others with an unidentified shape drawn where usually a rider would be. | Comment: | Horses as a motif are reserved for the highest classes, as was their possession. The chemical dyes have faded to gentle pastel tones, the indigo is stil very deeply saturated. The drawing, with its countless short strokes that give the reserved areas a pale blue tone, is very precise, with no seepage of dye into the yarn beyond the bindings. Much of the cloth was done in strokes of two yarns wide, meaning that (because of the axial replication) ties were placed on merely four yarns. | Background: | Chapters on Timor and West Timor. | Compare: | 157 | Sources: | Overall design similar to Amanuban mau depicted in Yeager and Jacobson, Textiles of Western TImor, Plates 97, 98 and 99. Horse and rider motif similar to Fig. 101a. According to Y&J, p. 133, in Amanuban the horse motif is found only in the villages listed above. | |
