334 Sumba, East Sumba
Hinggi (men's blanket)
| Locale: | Kanatang, probably | Period: | Early 20th c. | Yarn: | Cotton, hand-spun, fine | Technique: | Warp ikat | Panels: | 2 | Size: | 119 x 236 cm (3' 10" x 7' 8") LW: 1.98 | Design: | This antique hinggi was made in a version of hondu kappit with six, rather than the usual eight replications per panel, requiring more than the standard amount of work. The main motifs are skull trees flanked by male figures with pronounced members. The yellow accents were created by means of ndatta, staining. The midfield, kundu duku, has hidden asymmetry created by the red snake-like motifs. For the cloth to be axially symmetric, those above the axis and those below would have to mirror one another, but they do not: the are identical. | Comment: | [PHOTOGRAPHY PROVISIONAL] | Background: | Chapters on Sumba and East Sumba. | Sources: | This type of hidden asymmetry is the subject of Noble Virtuosity: HIdden Asymmetry in Ikat from Sumba, Museum and Art Gallery, the University of Hong Kong, 2023. | |
