Ikat from Luang, Moluccas, Indonesia

272 Moluccas, Luang

Lawar (sarong)

Locale: Unidentified.
Period: Circa 1935
Panels: 2
Design: Rimanu pattern reserved for the nobility. Accent stripes in natural yellow dye (curcuma most likely).
Size: 71 x 149 cm (27.9 x 58.6 in)
Weight: 525 g (248 g/m2)
Yarn: Cotton, hand-spun and commercial
Comment: This sarong stands out by its extremely fine and tight ikat work. Also by the powerful composition, the saturation of the indigo, the pastel tonality of its reds. The near perfect control of bleeding in deeply saturated indigo is hard to achieve, and must have required very tight binding which, given the complexity of the drawing, must have been very precisely placed on narrow skeins of yarn. Immaculate state of preservation. Ex collection J.B. Lüth.
