Beti naek (men's wrap)
| Locale: | Biboki, Insana district. | Period: | 1950-1960 | Panels: | 2 | Design: | Six fairly wide ikated bands with lozenge-shaped motif that probably represents a form of kaif, representative of links with the ancestors; numerous narrow stripes with small ikated snaking and dotted patterns. The overall tonality a pale raspberry red. | Size: | 112 x 197 cm (44 x 77.5 in) | Weight: | 770 g (349 g/m2) | Yarn: | Cotton, hand-spun, medium | Comment: | Vintage Biboki beti, made with traditional methods only. While commercial yarns and chemical dyes were adopted in Biboki fairly early on, this piece is 'full asli': made of hand spun yarns, using vegetable dyes. As the microphotography shows, this cloth was made with morinda, rather than indigo weft, a Biboki hallmark. Like many Timor ikat textiles it tapers little towards one end. Twisted fringes. Faint smell of skatol confirms advanced age. Excellent state of preservation. | Background: | Additional information in chapters on Timor and West Timor. | Published: | Ikat Textiles of the Indonesian Archipelago, 2018. Timor: Totems and Tokens, 2019. Ikat Textiles of Timor: Indonesian and Timor-Leste, 2025. | Compare: | 176 177 150 370 | Sources: | Similar to beti in Khan Majlis, Woven Messages, Fig. 270. Same colouration and same number of ikated bands, but slightly different motifs. | |
