In the realm of traditional Indonesian art forms, Steven G. Alpert is a legendary field collector, author, negotiant, scholar, and award-winning author. Many of his former pieces and collections have entered the public domain, and that achievement is best reflected in Eyes of the Ancestors, a book on selected pieces from the collection of the Dallas Museum of Art, co-edited with the eminent anthropologist, Dr. Reimar Schefold, professor emeritus of cultural anthropology and sociology of Indonesia at Leiden University, and the famous ethnographer of the Mentawai islands. Nearly fifty years ago, Steven Alpert was privileged to be received by a small number of 'grandfathers' and 'grandmothers', who were the last survivors of a generation that had come of age before the consolidation of European colonialism and modernity. Such persons were his companions and mentors, and it is to these elders and their remarkable creations that his praise and our appreciation is ultimately dedicated and due.
