Kafate (sarong)

Locale: Unidentified.
Period: Late 20th to early 21st c.
Yarn: Cotton, hand-spun, medium, and silk pinstripes
Technique: Warp ikat
Panels: 2
Design: [YET TO BE DESCRIBED] This cloth was acquired in Baranusa, a small port town in southwestern Pantar, but is very similar to the Tenapi Belang of the suku, lineage group, Uma Tukang or Middle Brother. Characteristic are the three white and one orange stripes per panel.
Comment: [PHOTOGRAPHY PROVISIONAL]
Background: Chapters on Solor Archipelago and Pantar.
Compare: 314 315 344 348 352
Sources: Very similar to Ternate Type B in Peni & McIntosh (2020:9), published in Textiles Asia. The motifs in the widest ikated bands are similar to the kafate shown on the magazine's cover, but that sarong has indigo for a background tone, rather than morinda.
