320 Sumba, East Sumba
Ranggi (men's waist wrap)
|
Locale: | Kanatang |
Period: | Ca. 1930 |
Yarn: | Cotton, hand-spun, extremely fine, double-ply in the ikat section, single in the pahitang borders |
Technique: | Warp ikat and pahitang (pahikung) |
Panels: | 2 |
Size: | 91 x 239 cm (2' 11" x 7' 10") LW: 2.63 |
Weight: | 820 g (28.9 oz), 377 g/m2 (1.24 oz/ft2) |
Design: | Classic design of a ranggi, a men's ceremonial waist wrap, as created and worn in Sumba's higher classes, though even there uncommon. The weaver has chosen a composition in the kawuru style - white reserve drawing on two shades of indigo - a colour palette that is not reserved for royalty, but here executed with a power and fluidity such as lived only at the highest courts. |
Comment: | [PHOTOGRAPHY PROVISIONAL] Note the relatively high specific weight, remarkable especially given that this ranggi is a quarter narrower than the average hinggi. The weight clearly comes mostly from the wide borders with their very dense pahitang. |
