Hi'i (men's shawl)


Locale: Village unknown.
Period: Early 20th c.

Design: Ceremonial wrap, hi'i wo hepi of the category henguru pidu, meaning that it has seventeen bands of main ikated motif, the second highest class - the classification system running from five to nineteen. Executed in white on indigo with morinda red and purple elements.
Size: 72 x 151 cm (28.3 x 59.4 in)
Yarn: Cotton, hand-spun, fine
Comment: Well preserved older example with good, tight weaving. Men's shawls of this grade are not often encountered outside Savu.

Sources: Nearly identical to early 20th C. selimut in Khan-Majlis, Woven Messages, Fig. 224. A particularly apt line from her caption reads: 'The hands-on cotton threads, the very clear ikat design and the warm shades of morinda red of the fine warp stripes point to an older textile.' Also nearly identical to late 19th C. selimut in her Indonesische Textilien, Fig. 438; and to hi'i in Duggan, Woven Stories, P. 85, albeit with 17 rather than 15 baris motif utama, bands of main motif.
