Period: | 1920-1940 |
Panels: | 2 |
Design: | Beti naik (men's blanket in Dawan). Numerous longitudinal bands, finely ikated with tiny geometrical patterns. Two wider bands with stylised buaya (crocodiles) or possibly tokeh (gekkos). General colour impression mauve with indigo. Note how the design imitates a three-panel construction. |

Weight: | 1020 g (446 g/m2) |
Yarn: | Cotton, hand-spun, medium |
Comment: | Excellent example of cloth from this region. Exemplary weaving creating tight patterning. Heavy cloth for gentleman of substance with a well worn feel. A few small smudges, otherwise in fine condition of preservation. Gentle tonality of pastel tones beautifully set off by well saturated indigo. |

Sources: | Very similar to 19th to early 20th example in British Museum, Nr. As1991,10.21, but with better definition. Yeager and Jacobson, Textiles of Western Timor, Plate 143, show a cloth with similar, typical Insana layout. See also Fig. 152, crocodile. Both of these were made with somewhat less advanced technical skill. This cloth must have been made by a weaver at the height of her power, who had raised her children and could devote much time to perfection of her art. |
