Ei (sarong)
| Locale: | Hubi iki (as far as weaver is concerned, wearer uncertain). | Period: | 1940-50 | Panels: | 2 | Design: | Ei worapi created by weaver from hubi iki moiety, with floral motif of European inspiration. Perhaps an oeuvre de commande for a Christian woman (belonging to the entourage of a raja, fetor or other dignitary?). For that reason wearer was not necessarily hubi iki. The sarong is marked with a little zigzag in white thread at the bottom right corner, bunga wurumada, signalling completion of the ceremony required after the weaving and before sewing the cloth into a sarong. | Size: | 60 x 149 cm (23.6 x 58.6 in) | Weight: | 525 g (294 g/m2) | Yarn: | Cotton, hand-spun, medium | Comment: | Weaving shows a few small errors of alignment, but belongs to the better category. | Background: | Additional information in chapters on Savu Group and Savu. | Compare: | 028 185 255 | Sources: | Design description based on Genevieve Duggan, personal communication. Cf. Khan-Majlis, Indonesische Textilien, Fig. 433, 434, 436, 437. Very similar to Dawson, Traditional Indonesian Textiles, Fig. 92. | |
