370 Timor, West Timor

Locale: Biboki
Period: 1930-1945
Yarn: Cotton, hand-spun, medium
Technique: Warp ikat
Panels: 2
Design: [YET TO BE DESCRIBED]
Comment: [PHOTOGRAPHY PROVISIONAL] As the microphotography shows, this cloth was made with morinda, rather than indigo weft, a Biboki hallmark. As morinda is harder to grow and harvest than indigo and also hard to dye with (it requires a mordant to adhere to cotton), this can be seen as a touch of luxury. Because the weave is relatively loose, the red weft is showing throughout, giving the cloth a pinkish tinge.
