  • 271 ROMANG
Sarong. Warp ikat. 1920-1940. The island's name is also written as Roma.

Romang

Romang or Roma lies east of Wetar and northwest of Kisar. The largest village, which stretches along the coast for some 10 km, is Jerusu. Its nearly 1700 inhabitants speak Romang, locally called Mnyala Rioman, which is similar to Kisar but is considered a separate language. The only two other villages on the island, Hila and Solath, were established relatively recently by Kisar-speaking immigrants. There are too few examples of Romang ikat to speak of an established style. Our example shows elements of the styles of both Kisar and Luang, prominent among them being a type of rimanu motif featuring a horse rider with raised arms.

Literature

As yet there is no monograph on the textiles of the Romang. The best source of information on the southern Moluccas is Forgotten Islands by De Jonge and Van Dijk.
