MICROSCOPIC DETAILS OF PC 299Magnification factor: 800-1000xSumba, East Sumba, 19th to very early 20th Cotton, hand-spun, very fine, double-ply, single weft (the mark of an apex Sumba weaving) Note that the colour of yarn under a microscope with object lighting can appear much brighter than it is in reality. Variations within sets occur because photos have been made with two different microscopes, one with 800x and the other 1000x magnification, and with varying colour rendering. Where possible corrections have been made, but in most cases some discrepancy is inevitable. Note also that in spots where the naked eye discovers hardly any colour, for instance in parts dyed yellow or green with non-colourfast vegetable dyes, the remaining pigment crystals tend to light up with often surprising intensity. ©Peter ten Hoopen, 2024.
