Tais sabu (men's wrap)

Locale: Marobo, Bobonaro District
Period: Circa 1950
Yarn: Cotton, hand-spun, medium
Technique: Warp ikat
Panels: 2
Design: Description as given by Joanna Barrkman (see Sources): 'This tais sabu is a distinguished cloth in the repertoire of Marobo textiles. This style of tais was formerly worn by men of senior status. Made from two panels hand-stitched together, the blue on black motif is created using indigo and mud dyes. Ikat on the side panel is also known as utus anan (K), gun (K) and silu kesak (T). These ikat motifs are dyed using Morinda citrifolia root. Dried us kain (K), (Symplocos sp.) leaves, which are traded from Ermera District, are added as a mordant.' Acquired by private donation.
