Design: The precisely executed patterning decorating the belly of this tais feto from Suai Loro, Covalima, the municipality of Timor-Leste abutting West Timor's Malaka Regency, was inspired by designs from Indian trade cloths or double ikat-decorated patola. Sections of indigo-dyed, handspun cotton flank this section before reaching narrow bands of warp ikat patterning near the ends. Warp float designs abut both sides of these rows. The two leftmost motifs in the outer ikated bands are called futus beliku. They were brought to Malaka, especially the area around Lorotolus Wanibesak during a migration/flight in the early 20th c.
Comment: Hand-spun yarn, natural dyes. This ceremonial sarong belonged to the wife of Tamukung (local ruler) Vincen Luruk. It was made by his mother Teresia Luruk Bouk. The ikat work stands out by its crystalline definition. Both the style and the weave type show great similarity to the men's wrap 327 and the sarong 328.
