Hinggi (men's blanket)microscope

Period: 1900-1925
Yarn: Cotton, hand-spun, very fine
Technique: Warp ikat
Panels: 2
Size: 148 x 239 cm (4' 10" x 7' 10")   LW: 1.61
Weight: 805 g (28.4 oz), 228 g/m2 (0.75 oz/ft2)
Design: Hinggi constructed with 6-fold, rather than the more common 8-fold replication in the endfields. The main motifs in this early piece are large and tree-like motifs that most likely represent skull trees. The midfield, called the kundu duku, the part that worn over the shoulders, carries the noble patola ratu motif. The outer bands, top and bottom, are decorated with smaller shrimp, the inner carry motifs that may be represent horses but may also be feline, interspersed with sea worms (the fearsome sandstrikers).
Comment: The yarn has the marked gauge irregularity that is associated with 19th and very early 20th c. ikat. The size is very generous, the yarn very fine and very irregular, which supports the early dating. As is often seen in early hinggi made in a noble household, the cloth has a low weight, producing a feeling of luxury. [Fringes had to taken from another Sumba hinggi of the same age and pasted in because the size of the cloth exceeded the photo studio's back panel.]
Background: Chapters on Sumba and East Sumba.
