Ulos (shawl)

Locale: Silundung region.
Period: Late 19th C.
Panels: 1
Design: Ulos mangiring na morpanganaka, ceremonial shawl for women. Dark maroon weave with beige stripes. Blue ikated chevrons in the wider beige stripes. Tiny ikat stripes on the plain maroon bands. Long twisted fringes.
Size: 75 x 184 cm (29.5 x 72.4 in)
Weight: 205 g (149 g/m2)
Yarn: Cotton, hand-spun, very fine
Comment: Old ulos of a rare type, made of very fine hand spun cotton. So fine that it is semi-transparant. A few tiny stains, otherwise in excellent condition. Ex collection Wassing-Visser. Microscopic photo shows that the very fine thread is unquestionably hand spun.
Background: Additional information in chapters on Sumatra and Batak.

Sources: Very similar to ulos in Niessen, Legacy in Cloth, cat. 5, 7c, p. 309; and to example in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Acc. nr. 1925.483.
